Hoping to get some advice on my DD3 snare pad. I'm basically an acoustic drummer from a past era and although I have some familiarity with e-drums I'm very much a non-technical guy. I bought one of th every first Roland ekits here in Vancouver back in the late 90's and gained a low-level, working knowledge of how to gig with them. I ended up doing a few builds and playing with triggers etc. I just knew how to plug one thing into another and understood piezos etc. but knew nothing of actual electronics then and still don't now. So I apologize in advance if there's some glaring and obvious issue that I'm oblivious to.
My DD3 & DD4SE modules are long gone but I've been using the old DD3 cast snare pad through a 2Box module. This pad has two separate XLR cords which I run through a splitter into the dedicated stereo 2Box snare input. I have a modern mesh head on instead of mylar and although the pad works not bad, something's not quite right.
Mainly, it sounds overly "hot" when playing somewhat hard... like I'm hitting it with a baseball bat - which I'm not. It's alright at normal or light playing but doesn't really like me laying into it much at all. Adjustments to gain and various options don't seem to make any positive difference.
So I'm wondering if this DD3 pad will also be problematic with other modules too; such as Roland, Alesis, Yamaha etc and specifically: the new Pearl MIMIC pro. (Which I want!)
When I used to play regularly I had the two DD modules as well as a Roland TD-8. I used a little Fostex mixer and was able to trigger one DDrum module and the Roland simultaneously for a fuller, more interesting sound. Of course the pad worked fine with either DD brain and I don't recall having any issues with that old Roland either. But modules have changed a lot since then.
From what I've read, pretty much any modern Roland pads/triggers will work well with the MIMIC; they're all fairly compatible just as they are with the ATV-aD5.
I'm interested in getting one of these Pearl brains when they hit the market and of course would like to keep playing my funky old DD3 pad. So, I'm looking for a good, educated guess as to whether or not my DD3 snare pad is likely to work properly with the Pearl MIMIC module OR the modern Rolands. I'd guess that there might be people on this forum who have, in a moment of temporary insanity, actually used a Roland brain with DD pads. If my DD3 snare pad works properly with the Roland it should also be fine on the Pearl MIMIC.
Appreciate your input.
Thanks!
