I answered my own question. I bought the chip and installed it, works perfectly.

You see the version in the display when you press power / turn it on.

Question about the upgrade chip causing a slight humming sound...
When I bought my dd4 around 1999, it came with version 1.3 or 1.32 I don't recall. I bought the 1.5 upgrade around 2002, but never opened it because I stopped playing...but I did keep it very safe. I've now put it in and it does work, but there's a slight humming sound that wasn't there before. Also, it seems that it runs slightly warmer (not playing it, but just having it turned on)...but it's been 10 years since I used it so it could be that's the way it was then too.
Anyone else notice this when upgrading? My thoughts are: it's normal, or it needs to be re-seated (I'm pretty sure it's seated fine though), or the chip is slightly defective.
Thanks.
