Hi guys and girls !
I'm happy and proud to tell you that I've just received my 1st ddrum module
It's a ddrum 3 (v 2.08 in good shape) as I knew that these ones give more editing possibilities (thx to every one here that helped me discover the ddrum world when I arrived) than ddrum 4 (as I love to search and program "my own special sounds").
It has the Scsi port already installed.
I've bought it in France for +/- 500 $ with a 10 meters multi-cable (8 XLR/jack) to go out of the module to a mixing console.
Price seemed fair to me as it's pretty hard to find this module nowadays.
First, I've checked all the trig inputs with a Roland mini kick pad (I only had that, all the outputs and it's ok.
Then, I've tested it with Midi from a Octapad SPD 11 and the dynamic wasn't good enough to me (expression, volume, etc.) maybe a matter of settings between the sensitivity of the pads of the Octapad and the Midi in parameters of the module ?
If someone has done this kind of use and can tell me...
I've tried it yesterday with a friend of mine who has the white ddrum pads with a little red stripe and the ddrum logo on them (just the logo, no number version i.e "ddrum3") and the "L" kick (the snare pad is a 2 zones pad, snare and rim).
I was very deceived about the response of all the pads and the low dynamic signal produced to generate sounds, nearly nothing except for kick and rim which responded well.
Of course I've tried every trigger type on each pad (kick, ddrum3 pad, rim, tube, hand, acoustic1, 2, 3) and obviously try to adjust the sensitivity but nothing was good, except for the kick and the rim...
When playing the sounds directly on the module (button edit mode) it works well so is it a problem of compatibility between these pads and the ddrum 3 module ?
I can't imagine it could exist a problem with the module as everything works well, except that...
Btw, these pads with regular drum heads are pretty noisy...
What kind of ddrum pads should I look for to have the best results specially about the position system which seems to had more life to sounds (can the colour of them or the colour of the stripe tell which generation they are from ?) ?
What kind of ddrum pads allows to use Mesh heads ? Do they transmit (if from the "good" generation) the position information to the module ?
What about the actual pads (i.e Roland pads) ? Do they "understand" and transmit the position information to the module or is there a special way to make it work well ?
Are the exiting ddrum triggers (red or black ones) "understand" position ?
Are they good compared to "right" pads ?
Any advice ?
Is it a way to completely re-init the module ? As I bought it from a guy who stored his own kits (and I don't like them at all I'd like to have it "new" as it came out from the factory (I've seen nothing about "re-init" in the pdf manual I've downloaded)
I've noticed that the memory protect switch at the back of the module no longer exists Is it a way to repair it opening the module or doing something special ? What kind of problem could I have if this switch is always set on the "off" position except that any storing action will immediately be done (so possibility of erasing an existing kit if not enough concentrated...). If only that, it won't be a big problem as I have a big Flash card (see below)...
So, I've bought too a 20 MB Flash card (see photo) but I don't know the right way to insert it in the module (the holes in the front side are larger than the card and it's hard too precisely see where the slots are...) and I don't want to make a big mistake...
I suppose there is a side (let's say the one that you see on the photo is the upper side of the card) that has to be on the right or on the left of the module to be correctly inserted in.
Apart of this, I was very impressed by the quality of samples and the possibilities of editing, specially the powerful filter (that can fully change a sound itself), the "pitch" (+ or - 48 notes which means + or - 4 octaves with always a good quality of sound due to the high quality samples of our beloved old brand) and the "attack" parameter which allows to define the starting point of the sound being played (it can change any sound a lot !)
All this offers almost infinite possibilities for sound chasers to create original sounds or "adjust" the existing ones.
I hope I'll be able soon to make some recording I'll be proud enough (for the sounds, not necessarily for the drumming and make you listen to it.
Thanks in advance to everyone here for your precious time, big science and friendly help.
Thanks a lot
