Can someone tell me the advantages of the ddrum 3 over the ddrum 4. Is it a matter of more features, are sounds rendered better, or is it something else?

The most striking difference is that in the dd3 you can upload your own samples to create multisamples. The dd4 does allow creating your own samples, but only one layer, i.e one sample for all velocities and positions. The dd3 also has a parametric EQ and other effects that you can set, in the dd4 that's all minimized into a few "variations" that you can choose from. It maybe should be said that the stock sounds for the dd4 are multisamples, and the vast majority of stock samples for the dd3 are not.

The ddrum4 added support for the cymbal pads and hi hat, which the ddrum3 did not.
Also, the sound management tool for the ddrum4 was PC based and allowed you to preview, select and transfer sound to the module fairly easily over MIDI.
