This seems to be what some are mentioning at least one of the 2 new things Nord is supposed to be revealing at NAMM later this week .
The Nord Drum is a Virtual Analog Drum Synthesizer where all sounds are real-time generated as you play. Create classic retro-futuristic percussion with analog waveforms or mix harmonically complex waveforms with different colors of noise for results that both sound and respond stunningly organic. The impressive dynamic range and fast response adds to the feeling of playing a real instrument. 4 flexible inputs lets you play the Nord Drum with both acoustic drum triggers, digital drum pads or any kind of MIDI-equipment.

Hi Sam,is this something that will enhance the ddrum modules or is it too soon to tell? Regards, Kenny Hello Kenny , Of course it's all speculation until the NAMM launch happens but it's kind of appearing like one of the new releases that Nord is releasing is something along the lines of being a type of unit that kind of falls into the category of a trigger capable unit with not only input options onboard but also a sound library on board so it's a plug in a play unit . Roland has gone that way with their midi units and so has Yamaha . Back in the day Korg made what was called the Dr. Pad units . They had onboard controls and it was pretty much a trigger device that you could use in different ways . Here's a picture of Korg's unit below . There's been a lot of technology since then and Clavia/Nord definately is no stranger to even creating their own technology when it comes to their products , so this should be interesting to see what comes of this later this week . It would be great to see a new module show its face on the market , but it's really great in its own right to see Nord getting back to e-drum gear offerings again . sam(otacon28)

I think the speed at which digital drums are moving is just too enormous for any company not to get into the action, especially one with such a solid reputation for excellence. Our future is bright Sam, Kenny

Based on that description, it sounds more like a combination of a drum machine and dedicated "Drum Synth" to me. We can already use any midi controlled sound source (sampler, synth, software, etc) with our Ddrum modules, so I'm not sure this is all that significant to electronic drummers. That being said, I am still definitely interested in finding out more about it.

Sam, what does "analog drum" mean? This is so cool!!- This is what a current day Ddrum mudule would look like to me,they're very clever at Clavia.-Kenny

So I was right - it's an analog synth with trigger inputs.
For those that aren't familiar with Analog Synth's (because they pre-dated Sample based technology), you used to be able to individually control a whole bunch of different aspects of a sound and the waveform generators creating it. You could literally custom-create the sounds your synth played and adjust them on the fly because you had that much control over so many different aspects of each sound.
Things like the old Moog's and Oberheim's Matrix series were legendary for the things they could do using this technology - Have a listen to the keys on some older Emerson, Lake and Palmer stuff some time - ALL analog or real instruments!
It looks like Clavia has taken that analog approach to a dedicated drum synth. Could be cool, particularly with the "Old is New" trend lately.
