Hi guys, is there any possibility to fix the error E.31 when turn the DDrum 4 on? I know already that the issue is on the memory chip 1, but how to solve it? Is possible to replace the chip or I can throw away the module? Thanks a lot!!

What version is displayed at power on (assuming the version displays before the error)? In my modules; For 1.5 and below the flash chips are Intel PA28F008SA-120 44 pin ( octopart.com/pa28f008sa-120-intel-7696511 ) For 1.54 the flash chips are AMD AM29F080B-90SC 44 pin ( www.semisourceinc.com/am29f080b-90sc_amd.html ) From the links above it seems replacement chips can be found although it could be a bit challenging to replace unless you have a steady hand with the appropriate soldering tools! @krillo is the electronics wiz so maybe has some wisdom to share, I know there are tricks to successful soldering techniques ;-) Not sure if the chips would then require a full erase and reload or such? I have never attempted this personally so unsure of the proper steps to recovery. Best of luck! Ken

HI Ken,
Thanks a lot for this information! Is very precious!
The module is on the way, I just bought from a guy that told me about this error... As soon as it will be in my hands I'll check for the version.
Anyway my doubt is, how I can identify the flash chip to replace? For what I understood there are 8 flash chips, but which one is the 1? Or all 8 of them needs to be replaced?
Probably @krillo can help me...
Angelo

The circuit board will have the chip locations labeled but I don't recall whether the labels are an accurate match with respect to identifying 1-8.
About the dd4 version, if it errors before showing the version you can also tell from the serial number tag on the back of the unit. DA4945 and higher are 1.54 with the AMD chips.
Oh, and another tip about removing the top cover (red); make sure to remove the nuts and washers from the 1/4 inch input jacks as well as the four Phillips screws or you can risk breaking the circuit board if trying to force it open as the top panel board is screwed to the red cover and the jacks are secured to the black frame.

I would not recommend changing the chips unless you have extensive knowledge soldering. I can't remember if the chips are socketed or soldered though.

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately for reliability) they are soldered direct to the board. Here is a picture of a 1.5 board with Intel chips. Considering that an E.31 will prevent boot up you basically have a brick unless it can be repaired. I agree the soldering job would be challenging!! Maybe there is a local electronics repair shop with the appropriate expertise?

So the E.31 error is related to the chip U9 right? I mean, is the U9 only that I need to replace, correct? No problem for the soldering, I have a dear friend which is very expert in soldering, he usually repair this any kind of device. Thanks again! Angelo

Angelo Hi, here my DDrum 4 board, as you can see the version is 1.30, if I will be able to repair the E.31 error, shall I buy the upgrade firmware to 1.50? Is this upgrade worth to be done? Also I noted that after few restarting cycles I got E.32 too.... this means that probably I have to replace U9 and U10 too... what do you think? Angelo

Here is what changed between 1.3 and 1.5;
Version 1.31 (981125) - Trig input buffer overflow fixed. Buffer would overrun when trig detection needs more input samples. - Overall output level raised by 6 dB. All voices have double output level. - Presets only use variations compatible with sound library 2.0. Factory presets don't use new variations of 3.0 sound library. - Palette has 5 unique tom set-ups. Tom palette had double set-ups. - Random parameter block playback. Parameter blocks can be used in random mode.
Version 1.32 (990505) - New kits. - Sound lib 3.1. - Demo songs.
Version 1.33 (000119) - New user kits. Version 1.34 (000120) - Slightly changed user kits. Version 1.40 (000303) - Mesh head algorithmns added.
Version 1.50 (011120) - Audio level increased by 6 dB. - Set main volume (active on all 6 outputs) in SYSTEM-OPT menu. - Sends and receives MIDI main volume (ctrl 7). - SDS variation 5 has mono mode trig. - New palette, user and factory kits according to the Signature Edition sounds. - The dynamics can be turned off, the trig level will always be at 75 %. - In sound manager mode, one can select a whole sound group (hold SOUND while dialing). The total number of files in the group is shown. When any of these are marked (blinking), the number of marked files is shown. - No more demo songs (new ones will be added later).
I am curious if even though the E.3x error is displayed and booting is halted, are you able to enter test mode (by pressing SHIFT+PALETTE1+PALETTE4 at the same time)? (PALETTE1=KICK PALETTE button and PALETTE4=PERCUSSION PALETTE button).

So the E.31 error is related to the chip U9 right? I mean, is the U9 only that I need to replace, correct? In theory, yes, but there could be several bad IC's, there could be bad solder points etc...

So, I checked for bad solder, no luck, always I get E.31, some time E.32 or E.35 I just ordered the chips and will replace as soon as they will arrive! I'll keep you informed! Thanks!!

U17, U18, U19, U20, U21, U22, U26, U27 and U29... All of them? Those are the chips involved in data transfer to and from the memory chips. Could be one or none :/
