I made an experiment, trying to copy the function of the cast cymbals, but with the shape of a regular cymbal. The shape and size of the cast cymbals are the biggest drawbacks of that design, imo.
I took two identical cymbals, glued strips of rubber from center to edge, on top of the bow of one and placed the other one on top. The piezo was mounted on top of the lower cymbal just outside the bell, this eliminated the hot-spot, as with the cast cymbals. The top cymbal needs more dampening to trigger well. One could use plastic practice cymbals, I think triggering will be fine then, or maybe top one plastic and bottom one a regular cymbal.
Next I will make a non-sandwiched ride cymbal. It will have a ring-piezo for better zone recognition, but that will lack the choke function.

How is the cymbal detecting the joke, is it a piezo plus Switch Design?
Cheers Frank
