Hi guys and girls
I cannot find pads having the position function to fully benefit of my fantastic ddrum3 module
Do someone know if modern pads (like TD20 genuine pads) have this function ?
I saw a Canadian website who sell pads and they say their pads do this...
I don't understand how but I'd like to know...
Widely, if our elder friends in the ddrum world have some pads that they can sell to me, I'll be very happy

Apart of this, I saw a new ddrum trigger system (the grey ones), did someone try them and can tell the difference from the older ones (the red and black ones). As they are moire expensive I guess they are better but...
As some musician don't like to play with e-drums, I've just bought a A400NC from Traps, a fantastic concept of shell-less toms, a very thin 12" SD and a nearly no shell double headed BD ; all mounted on a nice and solid rack.
The big "Plus" is that you can fold it very quickly and easily like an e-drum kit but it's acoustic, so the musicians and myself feel the air vibrating around the kit which is a great natural feel (obv)
I'd add some triggers to play my beloved ddrum3 module ; I guess it will be a great electro-acoustic system and I'll be able to permanently mix the balance between the acoustic and the sounds generated by the module.
Anyway, I need pads matching the position detection system of my module
When I'll have something that I'm proud enough to be listened to, I'll be posting some links to have your comments and advices.

Jedi, your best bet would be to stick with the pads from a ddrum2, a ddrum3 or even the Cast Precision :-) pads from a ddrum4 for the best results.

Otherwise, you could look at any trigger pad that uses a center mounted piezo. Keep in mind that you may get a "hot spot" directly over the sensor and the positional sensing will very likely not be the same or as accurate as with a ddum pad, even after adjusting the trigger type and sensitivity settings.

I'd keep looking and be patient. I see various ddrum pads show up on eBay from time to time that might be exactly what you're looking for.

There seem to be 3 or 4 dd3 tom pads. I can't tell what the snare is. You could send her a message, and if it works out I could pick them up and send them to you if you cover my costs. It's not very far from where I live, but the ad is a bit over-priced, I think.

It doesn't say if it's mesh-pads (no positioning) or not.

Just remember that the dd3 is still limited to 16 samples per sound, so it's not a lot that you can do with the positioning feature.

The grey cast pads (closed back) also have position.

I don't know how handy you are, but it's quite easy to build your own pads. Here's a drawing of one I did:


There needs to be a round aluminum plate in the center, and it needs to be covering something like 80% of the heads diameter. If smaller, triggering at the edges will be poor, but an advantage is that the zones triggered will be smaller. So one will make more use of the position feature that way. For example the cast pads, the plate goes all the way to the edge, making zones 5-8 very close to the rim and basically never getting hit.

Piezo should be glued on the bottom of the plate, in the center.

To mount the muff'l - turn it upside down and fill it with pieces of wood and glue, then glue it to the top MDF.

It's difficult to find press nuts with threading for drumscrews, so you might have to use regular screws. I used (europe) standard 6mm diameter hex-screws.

I have to confess that I'm not very handy... unfortunately !
The video from the link I've posted explains clearly what and how to do but I don't feel confident enough in my hands ability to start a work like this :-(
So these "systems" allow position detection and maybe generate a different MIDI note as some ddrum pads do ? I can't understand how... but it won't be the first time I don't understand something lol
If no "easy" solution, I may buy some pads like Roland (I have old Simmons SDS9 pads too which were the top at their time but now I'm afraid the plastic feel won't make me happy...) or a Traps E500 kit (without the module) as they seem to be "fair"... or maybe just add triggers (are latest ddrum Chrome Elite much better than older ones ?)
I feel a little bit lost... if I was rich, it would be easier to make a choice or buy everything but nowadays...

The pads need the aluminum plate and centermounted piezo to provide positioning. Pads that use "roland style" cone will not work, although they still may trigger OK.
Sam, the creator of this forum has several cast ddrum pads out on ebay right now.

I currently have (4) ddrum4 silver cast precision 10" tom pads left out of those style pads and they all are in almost new condition and work without any issues . I sold quite a bit lately so these remaining pads along with some other ddrum pads I have will be heading out to storage with some other extra music gear to make room for new stuff in my studio . There is always the option of calling Al Adinolfi at Boom Theory and he'll build a muffins set specifically for the module you specify.

Not cheap, but guaranteed to work.

I think the most important piece where position detection gives its best is the snare drum, which is the heart of the set (surely good too for the toms but maybe less important as they are less played and used mostly for fills) so if I could get one SD pad (with dual triggers and position) at a good price, it would be nice (Sam ?)
As the co-financial director (my wife) wanna know how much...
I can't understand why women like we waste big money in jewels or clothes and can't bear we invest some little money in music ... Any idea ? lol

Jedi, for the snare pad, make sure you go with either a Cast Precision or ddrum2/3 snare pad and not one of the SE series snare pads. The SE pads don't support position sensing since the sensor is out at the rim like an acoustic trigger is.
