I got to show you guys a pic of my drum riser soon. My DYO riser is the answer to not being a butt watcher. That's right, us drummers sometimes, sitting on the floor, jammed into a cramped corner, small if any stage, surrounded by band mates butts.
a little rant before I get into the DYO thing. Was in a 6 peace band, me, and 5 others. Three had big butts. The type of butt that could be used to do jumping jacks on. The type that a "Danger Wide Load" sign could not cover. You get the picture. Who wants to look at that? So... I get to the gig, and where do they tell me to set up? In the corner of the hall. Thus the 5 band members are standing in front of me. here i am, jammed in the corner, with all these butts in front of me. I am not on a riser so their butts are eye level. Plus they are crammed together, thus I... Mr wanna Be Seen by everybody ... hidden in the rear .. of the room, looking at rears! The himulation, the fustration... the..... errr... fustrating humilation! I could barely look up, as the only thing to see .. was burger butts. So... I decided to make my own drum riser...
My drum riser is small, measuring 4' x 4'. Since I fit everything on my rack, thus possable. take a 5/8's plywood, cut in half. Hinge it back together so now the unit folds . Thus folded, 2' x 4'. fits in a van really nicely. I glued carpet to the top, a nice platform. This is the neat part. I got 6, yes six rubbermaid totes. Three totes side by side = four feet. Three totes in front, three totes behind = 4 x 4! My totes are approx 16" high. I like em high to be seen, drummers should be seen! So, yup you guessed it.. No more butt watching! Eye contact with my band mates and shove me in any corner. My adoring fans can now watch me amaze them without the distraction of the big butted back up players who use to be in the way. I mean, errr... can sometimes notice me, if they are inclined, as I humbly provide my modest drumming skills trying to support their efforts.
This works, I'll get pics. The riser is solid. One will need a van. So, if you are thinking of buying a Roland TD 20 kit, think of it this way. Get a used ddrum module. Used Roland or Yamaha kit, or a DYO mesh kit. With the money you saved, buy 1. A good quality used van, 2. Portable powered speakers or in ear monitors, 3. build the riser, 4. With the left over money... insurance, gas, beer, and drum video's.
PS. The band fired me for not showing up for rehearsals soon afterwards. so now I am in another band.
Thanks for reading...
